A 29-year-old woman was rescued today from a rocky area of Furnas beach, in Vila Nova de Milfontes, in the municipality of Odemira (Beja), the National Maritime Authority (AMN) said.
In a statement, the AMN explains that the Dutch woman, who was surfing there, was rescued by the crew of the Sines Life Saving Station, after having entered the water “in difficulty” and “unable to counter the strong current”, on Furnas beach.
According to the AMN, the alert was given at 10:15 a.m. by the Lisbon Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC Lisboa), which reported that a surfer was missing after starting to experience difficulties in the water.
“On arrival at the scene, it was found that the surfer, a 29-year-old woman of Dutch nationality, was in a rocky, isolated and difficult-to-access area, and the lifeguard station crew rescued her using a water scooter, transporting her to the sandy beach of Furnas,” reads the document.
“The woman did not require medical assistance and left the scene on her own,” they add.
The AMN also indicates that, in addition to the crew from the Sines Life Saving Station, the Vila Nova de Milfontes Volunteer Fire Brigade was also involved in the rescue operations.
