Portugal has been breaking records when it comes to renewable energy. According to recent data from REN – Redes Energéticas Nacionais, renewable energy, specifically wind power, once again reached a historic milestone on Tuesday at 17:30.
Wind energy production in Portugal reached a new all-time high, peaking at 4,917 megawatts (MW), according to REN. On this day, renewable production reached 88% of consumption.
According to the information, last Tuesday electricity consumption totaled 167 gigawatts (GWh), with a peak of 8,553 MW at 19:30, and renewable production supplied 88% of national consumption and the export balance, with wind power standing out with 42%. The previous record was set on October 17, 2023, at 02:30, with production of 4,843 MW.
Renewable energy refers to energy sources that are naturally replenished in nature and are therefore considered sustainable in the long term.
When it comes to renewable energy, the main forms are:
- Solar: Solar energy is generated by capturing sunlight through photovoltaic solar panels or thermal collectors.
- Wind: Wind energy is generated by the movement of air, converted into electricity by wind turbines. These turbines are driven by the force of the wind.
- Hydroelectric: Hydroelectric energy is generated by the movement of water, usually in rivers or dams, which is used to turn turbines that generate electricity.
- Biomass: Biomass involves burning organic materials such as wood, agricultural waste or urban waste to generate heat or electricity.
- Geothermal: Geothermal energy is obtained from the Earth’s internal heat. It can be used to produce electricity or for direct heating.
- Oceanic: This is a broader category that includes various forms of energy from the oceans, such as wave energy, tidal energy and ocean thermal energy.
