A GNR pursuit of a stolen car between Alpendurada, in Marco de Canaveses, and Termas de São Vicente, in Penafiel, injured seven officers this afternoon, a source from that military force told Lusa.
According to the source, the chase began after the car carrying a 29-year-old woman and two men, aged 32 and 46, who were arrested, was reported stolen in Alpendurada and located by the GNR in that town, in the district of Porto.
“Once the theft was alerted, the [GNR] stations in the area were called, the vehicle was located but didn’t stop and the chase began. In the Entre-os-Rios area, the car rammed one of our vehicles, then went on to Termas de S. Vicente, turned the wrong way at a traffic circle and hit another car,” said the source.
The same source explained that “after this second collision, the car was intercepted in Penafiel and the occupants fled on foot, after which a pursuit began”.
Two of the suspects “were immediately apprehended but a third fled into a ravine area and was later caught”.
“Four of the wounded soldiers were inside the vehicles that were hit and the other three were wounded as a result of resisting the arrest of the individuals. They all had minor injuries, went to hospital and have now been discharged,” he said.
The three detainees will be brought before the Penafiel Judicial Court on Monday for questioning.
