On the morning of Dec. 14th eight activists from the Climate collective cut off one of the road accesses to the city of Lisbon near Amoreiras.
The action began at around 09:00, with a group of activists blocking the four lanes of Avenida Eng. Duarte Pacheco in the direction that allows entry to the capital.
The young people sat on the asphalt in protest at government policies and the actions of companies that ignore environmental impacts.
Meanwhile, two others were hanging by ropes from the viaduct, holding a banner that read: “The government and companies have declared war on society and the planet”.
The roadblock lasted around 20 minutes, until three PSP officers appeared and removed the activists from the road, according to Lusa news agency.
At around 9:30am, the police were reinforced by seven members of the rapid intervention teams.
Before the PSP arrived, some motorists and motorcyclists became angry at the protest and grabbed and dragged some young people to the sidewalk.
The group of activists has carried out numerous actions over the last few months, having several times interrupted traffic in various areas of the capital, such as Rua da Escola Politécnica or the second ring road.
“They’re destroying everything you love” was the warning displayed on a banner by the young people in front of the Museum of Natural History and Science.
A few days earlier, another group stuck themselves to a plane that was about to fly from Lisbon to Porto, at Portela airport, in protest against short-haul flights and in defense of investment in the railroad.
Among the most publicized actions was the attack with green paint on the Minister of the Environment or the Minister of Finance.
