The collapse of a cliff caused the eastern part of Pinhão beach in Lagos to disappear at dawn on Saturday, Hugo da Guia, Port Captain and local commander of the Lagos Maritime Police, confirmed to JN.
According to the official, Pinhão beach has two zones, and the cliff fall occurred in the eastern zone, on the smaller beach. There were no injuries.
Civil Protection closed access to the beach, which is one of the most photographed in the Algarve.
According to Eduardo Burnay, who runs a tour company in the Algarve and knows the area well, Pinhão beach is famous for having a “particular beauty” and is frequented by many people, especially foreign tourists, who take photographs there, from where you can see Ponta da Piedade. “It’s very sad,” Eduardo Burnay told JN.
He said that the sea was “very strong” and that you can now see a “huge crater on the site”. For Eduardo Burnay, “it was lucky” that the collapse happened at night, when there were no visitors. He also stressed that restoration work had been carried out on the beach next door, Praia de D. Ana, something that hadn’t happened at Praia do Pinhão, and lamented the potential disappearance of the site.
