Portugal is among the least prosperous countries in Europe and it only just manages to outperform the East.

In the 2023 ranking Portugal is in the second half of the table (26th place) of the richest countries in Europe, surpassing only countries in the East and the Balkans.

The results of the HelloSafe Prosperity Index, which assesses the quality of life and economic well-being of European countries, show a clear predominance of Western and Northern European countries. Luxembourg tops the ranking with an impressive score of 86.20, followed by Norway (85.09) and Ireland (84.72). These countries are noted for their robust economies, high standards of living and a relatively even distribution of wealth.

The Nordic countries, such as Iceland (77.04) and Denmark (72.96), also stand out in the ranking, reflecting strong economic development combined with high levels of human well-being.

France ranks 14th with a score of 60.36, a figure that reflects solid prosperity, albeit more moderate compared to the leading nations. Just below the middle of the table, in 26th place, is Portugal, with 51.16 points, beating only countries such as Moldova (36.99), Macedonia (38.46) and Albania (38.52) which are among the bottom of the table.

The disparity between Western and Eastern Europe is evident, reflecting the inequalities in the level of prosperity between these two areas of the continent.
