Madeira was awarded Bronze in the “Most Desirable Island” category at the 23rd edition of the Wanderlust Reader Travel Awards.

The awards, which distinguish the most desirable countries and cities in Europe and the world, are organized by the British tourism publication Wanderlust Magazine and are the result of reader votes. In all, more than 3 million votes were cast by 168,000 readers, who voted for the nominees in 22 categories.

“The awards and distinctions we receive are always important recognition of our work, but they also make us more demanding and serve as incentives to continue positioning ourselves as a benchmark destination, offering different and unique experiences,” Eduardo Jesus, president of the Madeira Promotion Association and regional secretary for Economy, Tourism and Culture, said in a statement.

But the awards for the national sector didn’t stop there. Portugal was considered the 10th “Most Desirable Country” for travel by readers of Wanderlust Magazine; Lisbon took 5th place among the “Most Desirable Cities”; and the Azores were in 4th position among the “Most Desirable Regions”.
