Thirteen people were rescued this Tuesday after being caught by the tide and adverse weather conditions while clam fishing in the Moita area, Setúbal district, the National Maritime Authority announced.
In a statement, the National Maritime Authority explained that the 13 people were on board a boat that was in difficulty off Rosário beach, in the municipality of Moita.
The alert to the existence of a boat in difficulty was given by a local man at 16:20, and two vessels from the Captaincy of the Port and the Lisbon Maritime Police Local Command were activated to the scene, the statement reads.
Members of the National Maritime Authority assisted the boat and the 13 people disembarked safely near Lavradio, in the municipality of Barreiro, with the Maritime Police drawing up a report.
As a precautionary measure, the 100kg of Japanese clams on board were seized and, as they were still alive, returned to their natural habitat, the National Maritime Authority said.
