Portugal registered 4,451 new cases of covid-19 between December 11, 2023 and January 7, 2024, an increase of 43% compared to the previous 28-day period, which runs counter to the decrease reported in Europe.
The data was released today by the World Health Organization (WHO), which periodically updates epidemiological information on covid-19.
According to the WHO, Europe reported more than 701,000 new cases between December 11, 2023 and January 7, 2024, a decrease of 13% compared to the previous 28-day period from November 13 to December 10, 2023.
Portugal is among the 10 European countries – out of the 62 that have transmitted data to the WHO – with increases of more than 20% in new infections, ranking seventh, ahead of Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.
Between December 11, 2023 and January 7, 2024, Portugal recorded 4,451 new cases of covid-19, an increase of 43% compared to the period from November 13 to December 10, 2023.

The WHO points out that the data released today is underestimated, since not all countries in the world communicate information and the testing strategy, which allows new infections to be identified, has changed.
Since the beginning of the covid-19 pandemic, and up until January 7, more than 774 million cases and more than seven million deaths have been reported to the WHO.
Covid-19 is a pandemic respiratory disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, first detected in 2019 in China and which has taken on several variants and subvariants, some more contagious than others.
