The Banco de Portugal launches new five-euro coin on November 13th: only 20,000 copies will be available

On November 13, 2024, Banco de Portugal will put into circulation a collector’s coin with a face value of 5 euros, called “O Conhecimento” (Knowledge), as part of the “Desenhar a moeda” (Drawing the coin) project.

The coin will be distributed to the public via credit institutions, Banco de Portugal treasury offices and Imprensa Nacional-Casa da Moeda stores.

The “O Conhecimento” currency only has release power in Portugal and presents itself:

On the front:

  • On the left, the face value;
  • On the right, the national coat of arms;
  • At the top, the legend “Portugal”;
  • At the bottom, the representation of coins and banknotes with the legends “500”, “20” and “10”.

Reverse side:

  • On the right-hand side, the representation of a test balloon, flanked on the left by the caption “Education” and below by the caption “Technology”, both inserted in school boards;
  • On the bottom left-hand edge, the author’s name and the caption “Mint”;
  • On the bottom right-hand edge, the year “2024”.

The characteristics of this coin were approved by Ministerial Order no. 440/2023, published in the Diário da República, 1st series, no. 242, of December 18.

An issue limit of 20,000 coins with a normal finish was set.
