red wine pouring into a wine glass

The Portuguese wine that’s making headlines in the United States costs less than €10. It’s the best wine you can buy at this price, says Wine Spectator, a US wine magazine.

There is a Portuguese winery that has been offering some of the best wines and olive oils in the country since 1267. We’re talking about Herdade do Esporão, and it’s presented by Wine Spectator, the prestigious American wine magazine that evaluates wines from all over the world and which is now highlighting the first organic wine from Herdade do Esporão (Alentejo), which was first sold in 2017, was mentioned by the same publication in 2018 and is now being highlighted again for its excellent relationship between quality and price.

Here is the description of the wine:

“The refreshing currant, red plum and blackberry flavors of this charming red are balanced with white pepper, undergrowth and spicy touches. Mineral details and spicy acidity complete a slightly tannic finish to this organic wine which spends 6 months in cement tanks and 4 months in the bottle. Produced by the historic Herdade do Esporão, it is a wonderful blend of grape varieties (Alicante Bouschet, Aragonés, Cabernet Sauvignon, Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca). The estate, located in the Alentejo, has maintained its original boundaries since 1267 and is dedicated to producing high quality wines and olive oils”.

According to the experts at Wine Spectator, “this wine invites you to enjoy its youth and freshness. It presents a range of aromas where blackberries and cherries stand out, offering a clearly fruity fragrance. On the palate it is light and approachable, with a juicy texture that echoes its fruity profile. Its freshness makes it a pleasant and easy-to-drink option, perfect for those looking for a casual wine to accompany cold cuts, aged cheeses and red meats.”

That Portuguese wines are of high quality is nothing new. But being a reference abroad is always a source of pride!
