The municipality expects to save between 25% and 30% in an area with a high water consumption record.
Aljezur Town Hall is to install 1,500 meters with telemetry in the Vale da Telha area to monitor and control water losses, in an investment of 130,000 euros, it was announced this Wednesday. Speaking to Lusa, the vice-president of the Faro district council, António Carvalho, said that with the installation of the smart meters, the municipality expects to save between 25% and 30%, in an area with a high water consumption record.
“In the first phase, we’re going to install them in the Vale da Telha area and its surroundings, which are the most problematic in terms of consumption, particularly in terms of inconsistent consumption and the biggest consumers of water,” he said.
The mayor said that the installation of ultrasonic meters is part of a set of measures approved in 2022 “to reduce consumption and mitigate the effects of water scarcity in the Algarve”.
According to António Carvalho, the municipality has “major investments underway to contain consumption, control and water efficiency”, and plans to install 16 loss control and metering points in the public supply network.
In addition to these measures, Aljezur Town Hall has made progress with reducing consumption in public buildings and reducing and, in some cases, closing down irrigation systems in green spaces, he pointed out.
In a statement, the municipality said that the investment also includes work on the network of water tanks in Chaparral, Carrapateira, Barreiras Vermelhas and Vale da Telha.
The work carried out since 2022, as part of the Algarve Regional Water Efficiency Plan to mitigate the effects of water scarcity in the territory, has the support of the Environmental Fund.
